IED

IED, or Improved Explosive Device, is the one thing that's feared over here. People don't know what they look like at home, so here is one which hit my patrol yesterday. No one was hurt, no equipment was damaged.

The hole is on the edge of a road. My K-Bar knife is beside it to give it some scale.

The right edge of the picture is the edge of the road. The insurgents had dug it in to the dirt of the bank, causing most of the blast to go out and away from us.

EOD on site said that it was 2 120mm mortar rounds and one 130mm illumination round.

The hole is still smoking.
